Rabbi Yoel Malik - Alleged Sex Offender
A Brooklyn yeshiva leader today was being grilled by cops who suspect him of having sexually abused three male students at the religious school where he worked, sources said.

The 34-year-old suspect allegedly brought two students from the ultra-Orthodox school to motels for sexual liaisons. Law-enforcement sources said he allegedly sodomized one boy at a motel, but another fled the motel room after the suspect started rubbing his back.

The suspect allegedly rubbed a third victim’s groin through his pants with one hand while masturbating with the other while the pair was in the suspect’s car on the way to school, officials said.

The victims were all 12- to 14-year-olds.

“There’s a fourth possible victim out there that they haven’t spoken to yet,” a source said.

Sources said the school leader was arrested and was being questioned at the 79th Precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Charges were pending.

He worked at Ohr Hameir, a school for Satmar teens. Officials said the encounters took place between March of last year and last week.

The private Borough school has been closed since the end of last year because of a financial dispute.

Malik was charged with a dozen sexual abuse charges related to incidents involving 14- or 15-year-old boys. 'He's a good man. I hope it's not true,' said his shaken wife, Rachel.

A Brooklyn yeshiva leader was arrested late Wednesday night on a dozen sex abuse charges involving three teenage boys, cops said.

Yoel Malik, 33, of Brooklyn had sex with one of the teens and rubbed his hand on two others, a police source said.

The teens were 14 or 15 at the time of the alleged incidents. The sexual intercourse assault on the one boy took place in a hotel, a cop source said, adding another victim fled a different hotel after Malik started rubbing his back.

The third teen was in the suspect’s car, en route to school, when Malik allegedly rubbed the boy’s groin through his pants.

“This is vicious gossip,” Malik’s visibly shaken wife, Rachel, said at the family’s home while her husband was being questioned at the 79th Precinct station house, prior to being charged. “He’s a good man. I don’t know what to say. I hope it’s not true.”

In addition to the 12 counts of sexual abuse, Malik is charged with 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, four counts of criminal sexual act and one count of forcible touching.

He was arrested at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday. No time frame was available for the alleged attacks on the teens. The unidentified yeshiva is currently not in operation because of a financial issue.

Police learned of the victims from an anonymous caller to a rape hotline.

NY religious school rabbi faces sex abuse charges
Associated Press - January 30, 2013

NEW YORK — A rabbi at a religious school in New York's ultra-orthodox Jewish community has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing students, a law enforcement official says.

The arrest of Yoel Malik, 33, of Brooklyn comes amid mounting pressure to report allegations of abuse within the insular, secretive community, the largest outside Israel, and barely a week after a respected religious counselor in the same sect was sentenced to 103 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl.

Both cases come from within the Satmar Hasidic sect, the official said.

Malik was taken into custody Wednesday after reports he may have brought two students to motels for sexual liaisons, said the official who was not authorized to speak publicly on the case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. A third encounter was reported in a car. The official said the victims were all teenage boys, ages 14 to 16, and the encounters took place between March of last year and last week.

A news release from the police department did not mention the school or identify Malik as a rabbi. Instead, it provided his name, age and address and said he was charged with "sexual crimes" involving three teenage males. It listed the charges as 12 counts of sexual abuse, four counts of criminal sexual acts, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of forcible touching.

The school, located in Borough Park in Brooklyn, has been closed amid financial disputes with the family who runs it and has been described as a small, private establishment for at-risk kids. It's not clear how long it has been closed

The allegations arose through an anonymous tip to a confidential hotline. Malik is part of the family that ran the school in Brooklyn.

It has been difficult to prosecute cases of abuse in the ultra-Orthodox community. Families are encouraged to speak to their rabbis instead of going to secular authorities, and when they do go to police or prosecutors, they are often harassed or shunned. In the case of Nechemya Weberman, convicted last month of sustained sexual abuse, the accuser testified that her family was threatened and harassed.

Four men were charged with trying to bribe the girl, now 18, and her husband with $500,000 to drop the case against Weberman, 54, an unlicensed counselor who worked with families for years. She had been sent to him because she had been questioning her faith and needed help getting back on the religious path, she testified. Prosecutors said there were at least 10 other victims, but the statute of limitations passed on many of them. Weberman maintains his innocence and said he never abused her or anyone else.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, who has dismissed rumors that he overlooked crimes in the community because he is too cozy with powerful rabbis, has set up a hotline specifically for victims of sex abuse. He has implored victims to come forward and promises support for them if they do.

Brooklyn is home to more than 250,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Windsor Terrace-Kensington Patch - Jan. 31, 2013

A 33-year-old man was arrested and charged Wednesday night for sexually assaulting three teenagers within multiple precincts, including the 66, which covers Kensington, police said.

At approximately 10:25 p.m., Yoel Malik of Bedford Avenue was arrested on several sexual crimes against three teenage males in both the 66th and 88th Precincts, police said.

Malik was charged with 12 counts of sexual abuse, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, four counts of criminal sexual act and one count of forcible touching.

Teacher At Brooklyn Yeshiva Faces Sex Abuse Charges
CBS NEWS - January 31, 2013

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A teacher at a yeshiva in an ultra-orthodox Jewish section of Brooklyn is under arrest, charged with “sexual crimes” involving three teenage males, the NYPD said.

Yoel Malik, 33, was taken into custody late Wednesday after investigators said they received an anonymous tip through a confidential hotline.

Malik is accused of sexually abusing the three boys, ages 14 to 16,  at a Sheepshead Bay motel and a car, CBS 2′s John Slattery reported.

1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reported there was another incident involving a fourth boy.

Malik is charged with 12 counts of sexual abuse, four counts of criminal sexual acts, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of forcible touching.

“It’s disturbing, I had no idea,” a neighbor told CBS 2′s John Slattery. “He wasn’t the most polite person, he was a bit rude here and there, abrasive, but as far as these charges I didn’t think he would go that far or I didn’t think he would be capable of what he’s charged for.”

Malik worked at Ohr Hameir. The yeshiva is run by his family, but is currently closed due to a financial dispute, Papa reported.

Malik is expected to be arraigned later Thursday.

His arrest comes just over a week after an unlicensed counselor in the Satmar Hasidic sect — the same one Malik belongs to — was sentenced to 103 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl.

Brooklyn yeshiva teacher accused of molesting teen boys
By Danielle Tcholakian
Metro US - January 31, 2013

Former home of Ohr Hameir Yeshiva
On the heels of convicted child molester Nechemya Weberman's sentencing last week to 103 years in prison, the Brooklyn Hasidic community is facing the allegations of child sex abuse in their midst.

33-year-old Yoel Malik was arrested last night and charged with several counts of sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, based on reports that he molested at least four teenage boys.

Malik and the four victims are all members of the Satmar sect and part of the Hasidic community in Brooklyn. Malik was a teacher at the Yeshiva Ohr-Hamier, which is reportedly closed for financial reasons. All of the victims were students at the school for the 2011-2012 school year.

Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed therapist jailed for molesting a young girl sent to him for counseling, was also a member of the Brooklyn Satmar Hasidic community.

The NYPD rape hotline received an anonymous call on Sunday reporting an alleged victim of sexual assault, and naming Malik as the assailant. According to the caller, Malik took the victim to a motel at 400 Washinton Avenue in Brooklyn for seven hours.

Video footage from the location shows Malik and the victim entering the motel, and the room, as well as leaving the hotel seven hours later.

Police say the victim agreed to discuss the allegations after a pre-planned two-week trip to Israel, but refused to say more over the phone because his parents were present. He is 16 years old.

The caller reported three other victims. Two are 16, the other is 15.

Malik engaged in various acts with the boys, from from ranging from fondling to oral and anal sex. The incidents took place in motels and Malik's car, and a few reportedly occurred in Monticello, NY. The fourth victims reported one experience in a synagogue in Williamsburg.

Cops say Malik told them he was a victim of sexual abuse at age 12 as well, at the hands of a family friend, but refused to produce further information on the incident.

He admitted hotel encounters with the first two victims. The second victim reported Malik massaging his back and neck, and providing him with cigarettes as they watched TV together for three hours in a motel on Shore Parkway. Malik confessed to the massage, but denied providing cigarettes or alcohol.

Malik also confirmed the encounters reported by the third victim, though denied any sexual activity took place. The third victim told police Malik drove him home from school on two occasions and molested him in the car the first time. A week later Malik performed oral sex on another teenager in the backseat while the third victim was in the passenger seat. When the boy told Malik to stop on the first occasion, he reportedly did; when he asked to be taken home immediately on the second occasion, Malik complied as well.

Malik accused the victims of making sexual advances toward him, which he told police he refused.

The Brooklyn DA's office said Malik has not yet been arraigned. His lawyer, Stacey Richman, was reportedly in court and could not be reached for questions.

Brooklyn rabbi arrested for sexually abusing at least three former students of his at a yeshiva

New York Daily News - January 31, 2013

A Brooklyn rabbi sexually abused three teenage boys from the ultra-Orthodox yeshiva where he once taught, cops said Thursday.

Yoel Malik, 33, a well-regarded member of the Satmar Hasidic sect, was arrested on 28 charges ranging from sexual abuse to forcible touching, police said.

He lured two of the underaged victims to Brooklyn hotels, according to sources.

The arrest came a week after a Satmar counselor was sentenced to 103 years behind bars for his repeated sexual abuse of a teenage girl sent to him for help.

Malik was brought to the 79th Precinct stationhouse for questioning Wednesday, and charged later that night, cops said.

The teen targets, who were between ages 14 and 16 at the time of the alleged incidents, include one who had intercourse in a Brooklyn hotel with the rabbi, a police source said.

A second youth bolted after Malik started rubbing his back in a separate incident at another hotel, a police source said.

The third teen was in the suspect’s car, on the way to school, when Malik allegedly began rubbing his crotch through his pants.

Police sources said an anonymous tip to a rape hotline led them to Malik. The incidents occurred between March 2012 and last week, officials said.

The arrest stunned family and friends in the tightly-knit community.

“This is vicious gossip,” his wife Rachel told the Daily News. “He’s a good man. I don’t know what to say. I hope it’s not true.”

Neighbor Misri Toba, who lives in the same Clinton Hill apartment building as the accused rabbi, said her husband was friendly with Malik.

“He’s a fine man,” said Toba. “I don’t believe it’s true.”

Malik faces 12 counts of sexual abuse, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, four counts of criminal sexual acts and one count of forcible touching.

Malik’s family ran the since-closed yeshiva, a small private facility for troubled kids. The operation shut down over financial problems.

Brooklyn Religious School Worker Accused of Sexually Abusing Boys
By Shimon Prokupecz
NBC NEWS-NY - January 31, 2013

A 33-year-old employee at a Brooklyn religious school was arrested early Thursday for allegedly sexually abusing three teenage boys over the last 10 months, police said.

Yoel Malik, who police say was a former teacher and part owner of the now-closed Borough Park school the victims attended, was charged with 12 counts of sexual abuse, four counts of criminal sexual act, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of forcible touching.

Police said the alleged abuse occurred between May 2012 and January, and that the victims and the suspect knew each other.

Police launched an investigation after an anonymous tip to their sex crimes hotline alleged Malik took a 16-year-old boy to a Brooklyn motel and had sex with him, law enforcement sources say. Those sources said police received additional information during their investigation that the suspect was allegedly involved in other sexual encounters with underage boys.

Four victims have been identified; they are all former students of the school, which authorities believe closed for financial reasons. Sources familiar with the case say investigators believe more victims are likely to come forward.

Sources say some of the most serious allegations came from at least two victims who told police they had sex with Malik on several occasions at Brooklyn motels, inside his car and at a Brooklyn synagogue. One of the boys told police Malik would drive him and another boy home after school and went into the backseat with him on one occasion to have sex, law enforcement sources said.

Police have surveillance video from one Washington Avenue motel where Malik allegedly brought a boy for sex Jan. 18. Law enforcement sources say he rented the room for at least seven hours.

Police plan to extend their investigation to upstate Monticello, where some of the alleged sexual encounters were also reported to have taken place, law enforcement sources said.

Law enforcement sources say Malik admitted to detectives that he had encounters with the boys, but denied having sex with them or giving them alcohol and cigarettes. He also allegedly told detectives the victims made sexual advances toward him, but he refused.

Law enforcement sources also said Malik made statements to detectives indicating he was a victim of sexual abuse when he was 12. Information on an attorney for Malik wasn't immediately available.

The accusations come amid mounting pressure to report allegations of abuse within Brooklyn's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, the largest outside Israel, and were reported barely a week after Nechemya Weberman, a respected religious counselor in the same sect, was sentenced to 103 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl.

Rabbi allegedly brought young boy to hourly hotel for sex
By Mary Murphy
PIX11 - January 31, 2013

The manager of a small hotel in Clinton Hill confirmed to PIX 11 that a married, Williamsburg rabbi brought a “tall boy” to a room there, for eight hours, on January 17th. 33-year-old Yoel Malik, a father of five who once ran a yeshiva for “at risk” boys, is now facing multiple criminal charges of sex abuse, reportedly involving three teens between the ages of 14 and 16.

But the rabbi’s mother, who doesn’t want to be identified, told PIX her son is the victim of an extortion attempt by a former employee at Ohr HaMeir yeshiva in Williamsburg, which is now closed.
“I don’t believe one bit these accusations,” Rabbi Malik’s mother told PIX 11 at Brooklyn Criminal Court.  “He has someone who threatened to turn him in, if he didn’t pay $10,000.”

But the manager of the Washington Hotel in Clinton Hill, Vittal Poojari, said of Malik, “He stayed for eight hours,” with the tall boy on January 17th. PIX 11 went to the room, 2-C, where Malik allegedly paid $40 for the initial four hours, and we noticed hard-core porn playing on a flat screen TV affixed high on the wall.  The room then cost $10 an hour for the remaining four hours Malik stayed.

Published reports say Malik had sex with a male teen at one hotel, while another teen fled from a different hotel, when Malik started rubbing the boy’s back. Yet another boy reportedly told police that Rabbi Malik groped the teen’s groin in a car.

Malik is a member of the ultra-Orthodox Satmar Hasidic Jewish community in Williamsburg, which has been reeling from multiple sex molestation cases in recent years. Just last week, a popular counselor there, Nechemya Weberman, was sentenced to 103 years in prison–for turning a 12 year old girl in his care into a virtual sex slave, over a three year period.

Friends of Rabbi Malik said they believe a former employee who plea-bargained a deal in a sex abuse case in 2007 is the man who called a rape hotline about Malik.

Brooklyn Rabbi Charged With Sexual Abuse of Boys
By Mosi Secret
New York Times - January 31, 2013

A rabbi from a prominent ultra-Orthodox Jewish family in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, was charged on Thursday with sexually abusing three teenage boys from a school he ran, in a case that is likely to shine yet another spotlight on a secretive community grappling with abuse allegations.

The rabbi and leader of the school, Yoel Malik, 33, is accused of taking two of the boys to a local hotel for sexual encounters and rubbing another boy’s penis through his pants while masturbating in a parked car.

The encounters, the police said, occurred from March of last year until early in January. The three boys ranged in age from 14 to 16, the police said, although prosecutors said they were 13 to 16. The police said no charges were filed concerning a fourth victim, who is currently in Israel. A prosecutor said at an arraignment hearing in Brooklyn Criminal Court that there was a video of Rabbi Malik entering a hotel with the fourth victim at 3 a.m. and leaving later in the morning.

The case began with an anonymous call to a rape hot line.

Rabbi Malik was arrested late Wednesday. The authorities and a Brooklyn prosecutor, Tziyonah Langsam, said Rabbi Malik had admitted to visiting the hotel and a car with the boys. The rabbi also told them, they said, that some of the boys made advances on him. Ms. Langsam also said Mr. Malik had made a statement indicating that he was a victim of abuse himself.

The Satmar Hasidim in Brooklyn have traditionally disciplined abusers themselves rather than reporting them to the authorities. Supporters of Rabbi Malik have claimed that the accusations were false and made only under the threat of extortion.

“Whoever knows this guy knows it doesn’t make sense for him to do this,” said Yoel Indig, 22, who said he had been a student of Rabbi Malik’s at the school, which several people in the community identified as Ohr Hameir Yeshiva in Borough Park. “He helped lot of people.”

“There was a guy that tried to take money from Mr. Malik,” Mr. Indig continued. “He tried to threaten him with an arrest: ‘If you are not going to give me $25,000, I will make a case and get you arrested.’ ”

Meanwhile, advocates for sexually abused children, who have argued that abuse is covered up and victims are themselves threatened in the community, said they had long suspected wrongdoing at the school.

Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg, who has pushed for victims to come forward, said he received a flurry of anonymous e-mails last week saying there was abuse involving students or former students at the school. Rabbi Rosenberg said he told those people to go to the authorities.

The police said the school closed last year after a financial dispute among its leaders.

Rabbi Malik was charged with 12 counts of sexual abuse, 4 counts of criminal sexual contact, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and a single count of forcible touching. He was arraigned Thursday night and released on $75,000 bond. His next scheduled court date is Feb. 19.

The case comes less than two weeks after Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed therapist and respected member of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, was sentenced to 103 years for repeatedly sexually abusing a young woman, beginning when she was 12.

That case heightened tensions in the Satmar community; many people there still believe Mr. Weberman is innocent.

Rabbi Malik’s case is, as Mr. Weberman’s was, a test for the Brooklyn district attorney, Charles J. Hynes, who has been criticized for failing to investigate and prosecute sexual abuse claims from the ultra-Orthodox community. Mr. Hynes has vowed in recent months to crack down on the intimidation of sexual abuse victims. The move comes amid his re-election campaign, which promises to be hotly contested.

The 870 Bedfor Ave. hom of Yeshiva Leader Yoel Malik, who is accused of molesting three teenage boys.
Cops collar Yoel Malik, a highly regarded member of the Satmar sect, after a complaint was filed on a rape hotline. It's alleged boys between 13 and 15 years old were molested by the yeshiva leader.

A depraved Brooklyn rabbi, busted for sexually abusing three teenage boys, shamelessly blamed his underage victims for trying to seduce him, police sources said Thursday.

Yoel Malik, 33, a highly regarded member of an ultra-Orthodox Hasidic sect, lured all three teens to Brooklyn motels, prosecutors and police said.

Rabbi Yoel Malik leaving central booking with friends after being charged

But Malik, after his arrest on 28 criminal counts late Wednesday, tried to convince cops that he was the victim rather than the predator. The boys were all his students at Ohr Hameir, a now-shuttered Satmar yeshiva in Borough Park.

The twisted teacher’s comments “were self-serving,” said one police source. “In other words, they were coming on to him.”

The alleged victims were between age 13 and 15 years old when the incidents occurred during the last 11 months, authorities said.

Investigators were trying to locate a fourth victim who left New York for Israel after the rabbi allegedly raped him — also in a motel, sources and prosecutors said. Additional charges are possible once cops speak with that teen.

The rabbi groped the genitals of all three boys inside the motels, prosecutors in Brooklyn criminal court said Thursday night. He also allegedly forced two of the boys to perform oral sex on him.

One of the victims was also forced to perform oral sex on Malik inside his vehicle parked near a cemetery on a separate occasion, prosecutors said.

The arrest stunned family and friends in the tightly knit community. “This is vicious gossip,” his wife, Rachel, told the Daily News on Wednesday. “He’s a good man. I don’t know what to say. I hope it’s not true.”

According to the Awareness Center, this is a photo of Rabbi Joel Malik, who is alleged to have molested three teens in his care at a now defunct Yeshiva in Brooklyn.

Misri Toba, who lives in the same Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment building as the accused rabbi, said her husband was friendly with Malik.

“He’s a fine man,” said Toba. “I don’t believe it’s true.”

An anonymous tip to a rape hotline led police to Malik, a father of five who taught at Ohr Hameir Yeshiva — a small, private facility for troubled youths.

Malik, whose family ran the yeshiva, faces 12 counts of sexual abuse, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, four counts of criminal sexual acts and one count of forcible touching.

Ohr Hameir made headlines last year when the Daily News revealed its staff included a Borough Park man accused of raping a 13-year-old boy in 2007.

Malik was busted one week after Nechemya Weberman, a Satmar counselor, was sentenced to 103 years behind bars for his sexual abuse of a teenage girl who was sent to him for help.

As prosecutors asked Judge Stephen Antignani to set Malik’s bail at $250,000 Thursday night, his mother denounced the accusations.

“This is a frame-up,” said Miriam Malik, 64. “This is an extortion plot. My son has a heart of gold. He’s a wonderful father.”
